I Will Be Your Loyal Leader—Vote for Me! (poem)

Abstract: Because I spent most of my life struggling with my father’s association with Hitler’s regime and thus comprehend its workings better than most, I am deeply concerned about the threats authoritarian leaders pose to democracies. As little influence as one individual has, given the millions of Trump followers, I warn in poetry and prose anyway.

What about his ignorance of the religious texts he loudly lauds?
What about the parental abuses that reveal themselves in his adult brutality?
What about his daily affronts through words and actions?
Do we not hear his scorn for our genuine heroes?
Do we not comprehend his disdain for our judicial practices?
Do we not grasp how he undermines our representative institutions?
Why do we overlook his slimy personality?
Why do we smile at his nasty schemes?
Why do we ignore his blatant criminality?
Do we not sense his narcissistic focus only on himself?
Do we not understand his obvious wish to control us all?
Do we really want to elevate this villain
simply “because we know this one and do not know the other”?
I vote for the other—
because he does not have a record of abuses and lies.
I vote for the other
because he is not beholden to individual and corporate influence peddling.
I vote for the other
because he pays his taxes like the rest of us.
I vote for the other
because he is not in the news every day.
I vote for the other
because he shows moments of empathy.
I vote for the other
because he truly resembles me and my ordinary life.
