Ikigai: For Paul Elovitz
Abstract
The idea of this poem was born during my July 2024 interview with Paul Elovitz when he revealed his secret to a long and active life: his passion for people and scholarship. He joked that if there is such a thing as a “tunnel of death,” he will be writing a research paper then, too. Paul has a strong sense of ikigai-the place where passion, mission, vocation, and profession intersect-which means that each day is infused with meaning.

In the rhythm of a hundred years,
A life in motion, ever strong,

Paul finds his purpose crystal clear,
Where passion and vocation belong.
Ikigai, secret long concealed,
To happy life and length of days,
In Paul’s choices stands revealed,
A beacon through time’s hazy maze.
Listening ear and scholar’s mind,
Society’s pulse beneath his pen,
Even in death’s looming design,
Research flows, time and again.
Midwife of knowledge, he stands tall,
For loved ones, a steadfast guide,
In life worthwhile, he gives his all,
Initiative and beauty stride.
Where mission meets profession’s art,
Ikigai blooms in Paul’s wise heart.
