I’ll Tell You What is Deplorable
Abstract
I was troubled by Hillary Clinton’s characterization of racist, sexist, and homophobic Trump supporters as deplorable and the latter’s contempt toward Democrats. I felt that the disrespect of both sides hid the horrifying realities of contemporary life that, to me, are deplorable.

Calling anyone deplorable is deplorable.
Being a leader who doesn’t care about his—or her—constituency is deplorable.
Murdering truth is deplorable.
Gaslighting is deplorable.
Cultural pollution that impoverishes our imagination is deplorable.

Colonizing our imagination is deplorable.
Craziness masquerading as normalcy and sanity is deplorable.
Sowing massive confusion is deplorable.
Resurgent tribalism is deplorable.
Hating a person because they are different is deplorable.
Unleashing irrational rage is deplorable.
Half the country viewing the other half as despicable is deplorable.
Poverty is deplorable.
Destroying the ecosystem that sustains us is deplorable.
