Taking Lifton Seriously: Psychoanalytic Listening and the Unfinished Project of Moral Witnessing
Abstract
This essay examines Robert Jay Lifton’s ambivalent relationship with psychoanalysis and explores what his methodological distance from psychoanalytic concepts may have cost his groundbreaking work on atrocity and moral witnessing. While Lifton developed influential frameworks for understanding ideological totalism-closed systems that control perception, thought, and language-his ambivalence toward psychoanalytic theory limited his capacity to explain individual susceptibility to totalistic systems. Drawing on Lifton’s own acknowledgment of struggling to empathize with Nazi doctors and his concept of “the scholar’s revenge,” the author argues that psychoanalysis offers what Lifton’s approach could not: tools for understanding the unconscious dynamics that make totalism psychologically necessary for certain individuals at particular moments. The concept of “stereophonic listening”-attention to both conscious narratives and unconscious emotional communication-is introduced as a complement to Lifton’s ideological analysis. Using examples from Lifton’s work on Nazi doctors and Aum Shinrikyo, the essay demonstrates how psychoanalytic empathy, properly understood not as sympathy but as disciplined imaginative entry into disturbing feelings and behavior, enables more complete moral witnessing. In our current moment of totalistic resurgence, integrating Lifton’s framework with psychoanalytic depth offers crucial resources for prevention, intervention, and helping survivors of extremism make sense of their own capture without shame.
