Assisted Living: A Dissection

Abstract

In early January 2023, my family placed me, nearing age 78, with little warning or preparation, in an “assisted living” residential health facility (part of a social movement that began in the 1980s). For 45 years, I had walked and lived in a wooded, cozy, somewhat secluded area. The uprootedness and sense of exile overwhelmed me. This poem arises from that experience and its long shadow. Dedicated to Dr. Inna Rozentsvit.
