Charlotte Kahn, EdD, is a marital and family therapist as well as a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York and New Jersey who did extensive interviews with former East Germans after the collapse of the Communist regime. This article is adapted from her chapter, “Emigration Without Leaving Home,” in the forthcoming book, Immigrant Experiences: Personal Narrative and Psychological Analysis (Madison, NJ: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1997), edited by Paul H.
