Lincoln P. Paine is an independent maritime historian. His publications include Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia (1997) and he is a contributor to the forthcoming Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History and Oxford Companion to Exploration. He has lectured in the U.S. and Australia, and has taught global maritime history at the University of Southern Maine’s Center for Continuing Education.
