BULLETIN BOARD

RESEARCH: Tomasz Pawelec, a professor of methodology and historiography at Silesian University in Katowice in Poland, is doing a research study and preparing a monograph on the history of psychohistory. He would appreciate information from a large variety of individuals regarding our field and we hope you will assist him by filling out a questionnaire and/or consenting to be interviewed. You can reach this Visiting Fulbright Scholar at Brandeis University, History Department, Waltham, MA 02254-9110, Tel. (617) 736-2287.

TRAVEL: Stephen Ellis of the Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis, who gave us a fascinating presentation on Verdi some years back, recently visited the composer’s hometown of Busetto in southeastern Lombardy before moving on to Bologna and Venice. Ralph Colp spent October 10-22 in England, partly at the Cambridge University Library searching for new materials on Charles Darwin. Jay Gonen and Mary Coleman spent most of October in Europe: Mary giving papers in Italy before joining her husband in France. Jay is hard at work on his book on Hitler and Mary has begun to rewrite The Blood of the Beloved, which is on the psychology and neurology of war-as-sacrifice. Last August Diane Gross spent five weeks traveling to Amsterdam, Budapest, London, Milan, Munich, Paris, Prague, Venice and elsewhere in Europe.

MEETINGS: The Forum’s next meeting is on January 27, 1996, (Saturday) when Mustafa Ziyalan, Diane Gross, Paul Elovitz, and others will address two related topics: “Research Findings of the Immigrant Psychodynamics Project” and “The Psychology of Immigrant Entitlement.” We are presently in communication with Professor Norman Simms of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel about a presentation in late February on psychohistorical method. On April 20th Bernard Paris of the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Institute for the Psychological Study of the Arts will present on the psychobiography of Karen Horney. The “History of Psychoanalysis” Conference will be held May 18-19, 1996, on Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Presenters include Larry Friedman, Peter Heller, and Mark Micale. For details contact Paul Roazen, P.O. Box 147, Menemsha, MA 02552, Tel. (508) 645-9869.

A NEW PSYCHOHISTORICAL JOURNAL?: Since all of the articles in a recent issue (Volume 10/Number 2/1995) of Mentalities that crossed our desk were psychohistorical, perhaps we should start to consider this publication a psychohistorical journal. We will query some readers and Norman Simms, its editor, regarding how to categorize Mentalities.

PUBLIC LECTURES: The Milton Kestenberg Holocaust Memorial Lecture, “Trauma, Loss and Creativity,” sponsored by the Training Institute for Mental Health, was held on November 5th at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. On October 13 Peter Gay (Yale-Emeritus) gave the Stoller Memorial Lecture, “Sex, Repression and Blue Shadows: A Psychoanalytic Reading of Thomas Mann’s Buddenbrooks.” THE Clio’s Psyche SPECIAL STUDENT EDITION is available for classroom use.

CORRECTION:. There were two mistakes in last issue’s “Bulletin Board”: Eli Zaretsky’s surname is spelled with a “Z” rather than an “S” and the proper address for Maimon Leavitt, MD, of the Robert J. Stoller Awards, is 1800 Fairburn Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90095.

APPRECIATION: Our appreciation to Mrs. Aaron A. Gold for her contribution to the Sidney Halpern Award Fund as a Patron.

WELCOME to new Forum members Alan Elms (University of California-Davis), a psychobiobography specialist, and Marvin Eisenstadt, a psychologist from Syosset on Long Island, who has written extensively on creativity.

OUR THANKS to our members and friends for their support which makes Clio’s Psyche possible.
